This early drawing is linked to a composition that François Boucher painted several times, probably after his return from Italy in 1731, when he was struggling financially (sales Sotheby’s Parke Bernet, Monaco, 8 February 1981, lot 82; Bonhams, London, 7 July 2012, lot 68; and Christie’s, London, 7 July 2006, lot 181). The composition was engraved by Étienne Fessard and published in 1756 (P. Jean-Richard, L’œuvre gravé de François Boucher, Paris, 1978, no. 995).
We are grateful to Françoise Joulie and Alastair Laing for confirming the attribution of the drawing on the basis of a digital photograph.

Ce dessin de jeunesse est à mettre en rapport avec une composition, plusieurs fois réalisée en peinture par François Boucher, probablement après son retour d'Italie en 1731 alors qu'il avait besoin d'argent pour vivre (vente Sotheby's Parke Bernet, Monaco, 8 février 1981, lot 82; vente Londres, Bonhams, 7 juillet 2012, lot 68 et vente Londres, Christie's, 7 juillet 2006, lot 181 comme 'François Boucher et atelier').
