Lot Essay
"I've enjoyed the challenge of young guys; this is probably my biggest motivation.” (Roger Federer, The Guardian, 2007)
Once again, Roger arrived in New York looking to cap an exceptional season with a third Grand Slam triumph and a fourth consecutive U.S. Open title. In a similar design to his Wimbledon sneakers, the Day and Night match pairs would feature Swiss flags denoting the years of his U.S. Open triumphs to date. In a match which thrilled the home supporters, Roger faced the big serving American, John Isner, in the third round and despite losing a first set tiebreak, he was victorious in four sets. Wins against Feliciano López, Andy Roddick and Nikolay Davydenko followed as Roger advanced, incredibly, to his tenth successive Grand Slam final.
Many felt that the 2007 final heralded a new era in tennis. Roger's rivalry with Nadal was in full flow and at Flushing Meadows’ Arthur Ashe Stadium, Roger would face Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam final for the first time. Once again he displayed his famous mental strength by saving a total of seven set points across the first two sets, winning both in tiebreaks. He broke Djokovic at the end of the third to become the first man to complete the Wimbledon, U.S. Open double for four seasons in a row.
Roger would go on to defend his Swiss Indoors title in Basel before claiming the end of season ATP Masters Cup in China.
