First edition, first state of one of the most popular of all historical novels. Scott began writing Ivanhoe in July 1819 and had finished by November of that year. The novel proved to be a spectacular success. Francis Jeffrey wrote in the Edinburgh Review that it showed "at least as much genius as any of those with which it must now be numbered," and in less than two weeks the entire first printing of 12,000 copies had been sold out.
