Throughout the long and rich history of baseball there have been unfortunate occurrences that led to break through moments. Wally Pipp's headache in 1925 led to a youg first baseman by the name of Lou Gehrig playing a game at first base. The rest was history. Similarly, in spring training of 1963 the Reds' second baseman Don Blasingame suffered a groin injury leading to Peter Edward Rose stepping in to fill the spot. Rose never looked back and captured the National League Rookie of the Year honors behind 170 base hits and a .273 batting average. As recounted by Mickey Mantle, Rose was nicknamed Charlie Hustle by Yankees pitcher Whitey Ford during a spring training game that year. Rose was leaping to catch a Mantle home run and missed by a wide distance to which Ford quipped in the dugout, "Hey, Mick, did you see ole Charley Hustle out there trying to catch that ball?" Rose was presented with the offered sterling silver bowl by the Baseball Writers Association of America capturing 17 of 20 possible votes. The bowl measures 8" in diameter and is inscribed on the front, "Baseball Writers Association of America 1963 Rookie of the Year National League Pete Rose Cincinnati Reds". Marked underneath "sterling" with Paul Revere Silver Co. hallmark. Very fine general condition with light surface wear. This particular award represents one of the most significant Rookie of the Year recipients in the history of the game and includes a copy of an image showing Rose holding the offered award.
