Pete Rose was a generational athlete. His fiery brand of play and lively personality endeared him to millions of baseball fans across the country. Rose also conducted a legendary assault on the baseball record books ending his career atop numerous batting milestones of significance. However, unfortunately, Pete Rose tarnished the legacy he had worked so hard to enjoy by placing bets on baseball games while manager of the Cincinnati Reds in the 1980s. The scandal and subsequent cover up grew to become one of the most notable in the history of American sport and ended with Rose, finally, accepting his fate. On August 23, 1989, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bart Giamatti executed the judgement on Rose that so many had feared. As part of the "Agreement and Resolution" document, on page number 4, letter A: "Peter Edward Rose is hereby declared permanently ineligible in accordance with Major League Rule 21 and placed on the Ineligible List." Rose accepted the punishment and the book would be closed on one of the great tragedies in baseball history.
Offered is the original five page document which was Rose's fully executed copy as received from the office of the Commissioner of Baseball. Typewritten agreement includes summary of the betting allegations against Rose in addition to details on the exhaustive investigation conducted by MLB into the matter. Final page is signed by Rose, Commissioner Bart Giamatti, Fay Vincent (as witness), and Reuven Katz, Esquire. The agreement also includes the original envelope as returned within to Rose once countersigned and a typewritten one page letter of provenance signed by Rose confirming that the offered agreement was his original fully executed copy. Unique and historic document of equal part tragic and significant importance. Includes full LOAs from PSA/DNA and JSA as well as Pete Rose signed letter of provenance: Document: EX, Signatures: NM
