Lot Essay

Uncommon candid image taken during Lou Gehrig's heroic "Luckiest Man Alive" farewell speech given at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939. Stamped by International News Photo on the reverse with pencil name identification as printed in the late 1940s. Image measures 7"x9" picturing Gehrig wiping away tears with a handkerchief as Babe Ruth stands in the background. Appropriately, a portion of an award plaque is visible in front of Gehrig which reads "Don't Quit!". The offered photo is the first of this exact vantage point that we have encountered. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA (Type II): EX-MT
