Lot Essay

The present work may be a study for the artist's exhibition piece Sunset in the Wilderness (location unknown), exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1859. Elements of Indians at Sunset characterize Gifford's work of this period, such as the sun centered within the composition, the repoussoir of trees framing the scene and the native figures.
