SIGNED MA SHAOXUAN, DATED TO THE THIRD MONTH OF SPRING OF THE GUIMAO YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1903
The bottle is painted on one side with a scene of a scholar seated in a mountainside retreat below a pine tree, with an attendant approaching from the exterior. The reverse is inscribed with an excerpt from "Ode to the Sound of Autumn," a work by the famous Song poet Ouyang Xiu.

A glass snuff bottle painted in the same year, 1903, with a calligraphic inscription on one side, but with the 'hundred antiques' theme on the other, was sold in Snuff Bottles from the Tuyet Nguyet and Stephen Markbreiter Collection Part I, Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 4 June 2021, lot 1018.
