Further details
GIOVANNI FRANCESCO BARBIERI, CALLED THE 'GUERCHIN', THE HEAD OF A BEARDED MAN WEARING A CAP, PEN AND BROWN INK
The combination seen here of fine, feathery hatching, often combined with some carefully applied dots, can be found in many of Guercino’s drawings. Among the sheets that display the same style and technique are one showing A man weighing spices sold at Christie’s, London, 30 March 1976, lot 12A (see D.M. Stone, Guercino. Master Draftsman. Works from North American Collections, exh. cat., Arthur M. Sackler Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, 1991, no. 229, pl. Q) and Madonna and Child with Saint Anne in the British Museum, London (inv. Pp. 4-62; see N. Turner and C. Plazzotta, Drawings by Guercino from British Collections, London, 1991, no. 36, ill.). Nicholas Turner has suggested that the present drawing was executed relatively early in the artist’s career.
We are grateful to Nicholas Turner for his assistance in cataloguing this drawing and for confirming the attribution.

Lot Essay

Stone, Guercino. Master Draftsman. Works from North American Collections, cat. exp., Arthur M. Sackler Museum, Harvard University Art Museums, 1991, n° 229, plate Q) et la Vierge et l'Enfant avec Sainte Anne au British Museum à Londres (inv. Pp. 4-62 ; voir, N. Turner, C. Plazzotta, Drawings by Guercino from British Collections, 1991, British Museum, London, n° 36, ill.).
