CIRCLE OF FRANCESCO PRIMATICCIO, THE TROJANS BRINGING THE HORSE INSIDE THE WALLS, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE
This composition, with some differences, is comparable to an engraving by Giulio Bonasone after a drawing by Primaticcio in Windsor Castle (inv. RCIN 905139; A.E Popham and J. Wilde, The Italian Drawings of the XV and XVI Centuries in the Collection of His Majesty the King at Windsor Castle, London, 1949, no. 755). The wider framing in this drawing allows for a boat to show to the foreground on the left and the town in the background is more detailed.
The historical frieze that frames the central scene is flanked on either side by statues of Mars and Venus. It is reproduced alone in a drawing kept at the Mobilier National (inv GMTB/409Bis; op. cit., no. 17) and was probably used in the stucco decorations to frame Primaticcio's painted compositions at the Château de Fontainebleau, in particular the cycle of frescoes on the History of Troyes produced in the years 1537-1539 (op. cit., pp. 107-109).

Lot Essay

Cette composition, avec quelques différences, est comparable à une gravure de Giulio Bonasone d’après un dessin du Primatice conservé à Windsor (inv. RCIN 905139 ; A.E Popham and J. Wilde, The Italian Drawings of the XV and XVI Centuries in the Collection of His Majesty the King at Windsor Castle, London, 1949, no. 755).). Le cadrage plus large ici permet d’ajouter au premier plan un bateau sur la gauche et la ville à l’arrière-plan est plus détaillée.
La frise historiée qui encadre la scène centrale est flanquée de part et d’autres des statues de Mars et Vénus. Elle est reprise seule dans un dessin conservé au Mobilier National (inv GMTB/409Bis ; op. cit., no 17) et a probablement servi aux décorations en stuc pour encadrer les compositions peintes de Primatice au château de Fontainebleau, notamment le cycle de fresques sur l’Histoire de Troyes réalisé dans les années 1537-1539 (op. cit., pp. 107-109).
