Lot Essay

Aleksei Kivshenko is best known for his military, genre and hunting scenes. In 1891 Kivshenko accompanied the archaeological expedition of the art historian Nikodim Kondakov (1844-1925) to Palestine and Syria; the nature and local life of the Middle East inspired numerous sketches and studies that he brought back with him to Russia.
