The renowned prayer book in praise of the Prophet Muhammad, Arabic manuscript on burnished paper, 93ff. plus three flyleaves, each folio with 11ll. of black naskh within thick gold rules, gold rosette verse markers, catchwords, outer margins with occasional rococo floral sprays, two illuminated headpieces, chapter headings separated in gold and polychrome cartouches, with contemporaneous illustrations of Mecca and Medina, colophon signed and dated, in gilt and tooled binding with flap, gold painted pink paper doublures

Lot Essay

The scribe of our prayer book, ‘Ali al-Ulwi Efendi was an Albanian who studied under Ali Wasfi Efendi and Çömez Mustafa Efendi. He was the instructor in calligraphy in the Bezm-i Alem Valide Sultan School in Çemberlitaş. He died in AH 1270 and is buried in Üsküdar, Turkey.
