Lot Essay

At the Gym is a study for the oil painting known as The Vaulting Horse, exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1975. The human figure in action, including gymnasts, acrobats and swimmers is a subject revisited regularly throughout the artist's life’s work.
