There are several pieces of imperial Ming dynasty (1368-1644) Chinese lacquer furniture with this distinctive sprinkled mother-of-pearl finish in the Palace Museum collection, Beijing, including a black lacquer retangular table decorated with dragons illustrated in Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties: The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, 2002, p128; a black lacquer bookshelf decorated with dragons, in the same publication, no. 186, p 223; and a black lacquer table screen, no. 200, p248, op cit. The present table may be compared with an imperial mother-of-pearl inlaid gilt-decorated black and red lacquered softwood table, Wanli mark and period (1573-1619), sold at Christie's New York, 15 September 2011, lot 1325. The present lot may also be compared with the slightly earlier mother-of-pearl-inlaid black lacquer table from the Ming dynasty, Wanli period (1572-1620), formerly in the collection of Mrs Nelson A. Rockefeller that sold at Christie's New York, in the Ann and Gordon Getty Collection: Volume 4, Chinese Works of Art, English and European Furniture and Decorative Arts, 23 October 2022, lot 612.
