Details
The Dalmore distillery is located in Alness, Scotland and was founded by entrepreneur Alexander Matheson in 1839. The Dalmore’s heritage however, dates back even further, to 1263, when the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie saved King Alexander III from a charging stag and was granted the right to use the 12 pointed Royal stag emblem on their coat of arms that now famously adorns bottles of Dalmore whisky. Descendants of the Clan became owners of The Dalmore distillery in 1867, merging the Royal Stag and whisky together. Interestingly, in spite of a previously smooth operation, the Dalmore was partially shut down when it was destroyed by an explosion and fire in 1920 after the British Royal Navy started to use the firth next to the distillery in the production of deep sea mines. After having been family owned until 1960, The Dalmore was taken over by its largest client; Whyte & Mackay. The distillery is run using processes involving multi cask maturation, water taken from local water flown from the deep Northern Highlands and a completely natural maturation process.
