BOND, Michael (1926-2017)
A Bear Called Paddington. London: Collins, 1958.
An excellent first edition of the first appearance of Paddington Bear. Arriving at Paddington Station from darkest Peru with a label around his neck reading: ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you,’ Paddington Bear is taken in by the Brown family. Over the years he has enjoyed numerous adventures, including a recent visit to Buckingham Palace, that have cemented his status as a modern British fictional icon.
Octavo. Black and white illustrations by Peggy Fortnum (some light spotting, endpapers a little browned). Original pink cloth, lettered in silver on the spine, original dust-jacket, price-clipped but with price of ‘9s. 6d. net.’ pasted onto front flap (a few faint spots and marks, short closed tear in rear panel). Provenance: previous owner inscription on front endpaper.
