Lot Essay

The present work is a study for the oil painting Vision of Ezekiel, 1912 (Tate, London), made by Bomberg when his mother died of pneumonia aged 48. The Old Testament Book of Ezekiel and its story of the resurrection of the dead inspired Bomberg. Vision of Ezekiel shows heartfelt moments from the biblical story; having risen from the dead, figures clasp each other with a profound sense of wonder.

We are very grateful to Richard Cork for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
