Lot Essay

This large drawing appears to be a capriccio, suggesting a date in the 1790s, when Sandby was experimenting with constructed, idealised compositions. The castle to the right recalls Harlech Castle, a subject Sandby depicted many times. Sandby's capriccios often include a prominent tree in the foreground as a framing device, as seen here.
