Lot Essay

Seago made eight major painting trips to France in the 1950s and 1960s, on his yacht Capricorn. He often stopped off at Dieppe or at Honfleur in the Seine estuary opposite Le Havre, before sailing up the river Seine to Paris.

The barges illustrated in the present lot, on the 25 kilometre Tancarville Canal, were a popular subject for the artist. (J. Reid, Edward Seago: The Landscape art, 1991, p.179).
