First edition, first issue in the extremely rare dust-jacket by Youngman Carter. ‘I have always had a soft spot in my heart for [England Made Me] […] I was quite satisfied with my portrait of Anthony […] I was satisfied too with Kate, Anthony’s sister, who seems to me the woman I have drawn better than any other, with the possible exception of Sarah in The End of the Affair…’ (Greene, Ways of Escape). (Pp.297-8 a cancel, tiny insignificant nick to pp.237-8 without loss, just the faintest of spotting confined to margins of half-title and following few leaves, a few faint spots to fore-edge.) Original full red cloth, spine lettered in gilt (extremity of foot of spine slightly discoloured, two tiny areas of loss of colour on upper joint and lower edge of rear cover); original dust-jacket with pictorial front cover after Youngman Carter, text printed in black with price of 7/6 (spine and fore-edges of dust-jacket lightly soiled and stained, some minor marginal nicks with associated losses to 2 letters at head of spine and loss to publisher’s name at foot, some colour-bleed through from cloth onto verso of jacket, old bookseller’s pencilled price and note on front flap); custom quarter morocco box.
