Lot Essay

Charles Garabed Atamian was an Ottoman-born French painter of Armenian descent. Between 1887 and 1893, he was a pupil of Antonio Ermolao Paoletti at the Murad Rafaelian School in Venice. He returned to Istanbul to work at the Yildiz Porcelain Factory for two years before moving to Paris in 1897. He exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. Between 1932 and 1939, he spent his summers painting the beach in Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie in the Pays de la Loire region of France. (Garo Kürkman, Armenian Painters in the Ottoman Empire 1600-1923, vol I, pp. 175).
