Modelled from a nephrite jade stone, named Pounamu by the Maori, this Hei tiki pendant depicts a stylised figure. With its hands resting on its crossed legs, the figurine leans its head towards the sky in a grimace whose expressiveness is accentuated by the red wax that surrounds its eyes - a tell-tale sign of exchanges with European travellers. The strength of this sculpture lies not only in its subtly carved features, but also in the roundness of its slightly elongated forms, conveying perfect harmony to the sculpture as a whole.
