Lot Essay

Helen Bradley wrote of the present work, 'Walking home along Lees Road on Friday night was always great fun, especially when it was cold and frosty and dark because all the shops were lit up and full of nice things. The fish and chips smelled delicious, so did the confectioners next door with their fresh bread, hot muffins and hot pies. Sometimes they made potato pies in brown basins. They had a crispy crust, and when Mother and the Aunts bought them, we had to hurry home because they were piping hot and looked so good that George and I danced all the way home. When Mr Taylor (the Bank Manager) came to meet Miss Carter (who wore Pink) they always took something good home to eat, but we all felt a little sorry for the poor people who were flitting with their few bits of furniture on a little cart. It was such a cold night, and the year was 1906'.
