Lot Essay

Impressive figural bronze sculpture depicting a 19th century player reaching to catch a baseball wearing bib front uniform and pillbox hat. Very fine and detailed work with player positioned atop a plinth style base. Hartley attended the Albany Academy later studying in both London and Paris. His works are highly regarded and include three of the nine busts around the Thomas Jefferson wing of the Library of Congress: EX-MT
