Lot Essay

We are grateful to Andrea de Marchi, Matteo Mazzalupi and Emanuele Zappasodi for sharing their thoughts on this panel. Whilst a certain attribution has yet to be found, it shows affinities with painters active in the mid-fifteenth century in Lazio, such as Giovenale da Orvieto, and the Marche, such as Giacomo di Nicola. Prof. De Marchi notes that this picture is by the same hand as that of a Madonna and Child Enthroned that was with Carlo De Carlo in 1988, which was given by Carlo Volpe to Pietro di Domenico da Montepulciano, and later to Lello da Velletri by Filippo Todini.
