Lot Essay
World Time reference 5230G is very rarely offered at auction or seen publicly. The present ‘Mexico’ Limited Edition reference 5230G-022 is among the scarcest of all versions and, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of the 'Mexico' Limited Edition ever to be offered at international auction. Only 40 pieces were created in 2019 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Patek Philippe official Mexico distributor 'Mondi Group'. For this anniversary, Patek Philippe created this very special edition of the reference 5230G World Time watch. Most strikingly, the city of ‘Mexico’ appears in red replacing ‘London’ as the home city of the 24 world cities. The centre of the dial is decorated guilloché grey especially for this edition and the back of the timepiece is engraved around the edge of the sapphire crystal display back with '1994 - Mexico - 2019'
Reference 5230
A descendant of the legendary Patek Philippe World Time watches of the 1930s, now ultra-desirable to collectors, reference 5230 was introduced in 2016. The dial centre is adorned with a circular hand-guilloched motif. The ultra-thin self-winding movement with its two city and 24-hour rotating disks serves to keep simultaneous and permanent track of the time in all 24 time zones. Thanks to an ingenious mechanism patented in 1999, the user can simultaneously correct all the World Time displays in one-hour increments by simply pressing the pusher at 10 o’clock.
