Richard William Hubbard produced exquisitely refined paintings of nineteenth century landscapes depicting New England and upstate New York. Born in Middletown, Connecticut, Hubbard studied painting in New York with Samuel F.B. Morse and possibly Daniel Huntington. Hubbard exhibited for over forty years at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association and the American Art Union. A close friend of Sanford Robinson Gifford, Hubbard shared the Luminist preoccupation with light, atmosphere and attention to detail.
