Lot Essay

The present composition follows a print by Schelte Bolswert (Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no. DYCE.2257) that reproduces Anthony van Dyck's depiction of the Crucifixion in Saint Michael's Church, Ghent.
Here the artist has extended the landscape at the right, and omitted Mary Magdalene at the foot of the cross.

We are grateful to Jan de Maere for proposing that this is an autograph work by Willem van Herp and dating it to the mid-1660s (written communication, 19 August 2022).
