Lot Essay

This painting may well be the only extant signed work by Cocqueel and, interestingly, appears to be signed twice. Very little is known of Cocqueel's life other than the fact that he joined the Antwerp guild in 1674-75 and was still alive in 1691, according to a will drawn up by his son in that year. The attribution to Cocqueel has been endorsed on the basis of photographs by Fred G. Meijer, to whom we are grateful.
