That this painting was acquired very soon after it was painted by a relation of O’Conor’s friend, Wladyslaw Slewinski (1856-1918), is a tribute to the Irishman’s standing within the Pont-Aven School of Artists. Marie Schevtzoff was one of the daughters of a senior official in the Tsarist administration, her family also owning mines in Russia. She moved with her sister Eugenia to Paris where she studied music. Later, having met Wladyslaw Slewinski, they followed him to Pont-Aven and then Le Pouldu in Brittany, where the present work was most probably painted.
