Made in a limited edition of 100 examples cased in platinum, the stunningly attractive reference 5105P-001 is fitted with historic original 1959 Patek Philippe caliber 9’’’90 movements that were fully refinished for the purpose. Created to celebrate the reopening of the world-famous Salons at Rue du Rhône 41 in Geneva in 2006, it is so treasured by its fortunate owners that in the 18 years since production ended, less than 20 examples have ever been resold on the open market. Moreover, the tools made to produce the edition have been destroyed, thus making it impossible for it ever to be reproduced.
Unquestionably one of Patek Philippe’s most attractive and sought after modern time-only wristwatches, the story of reference 5105 is fascinating and is closely linked with the history of the company in the 20th century. The idea for the limited edition was formed when the Patek Philippe watch department moved from its historic headquarters in the centre of Geneva to its new headquarters in Plan-Les-Ouates in 1996. On the sixth floor of the historic Rue du Rhône building, remarkably, one hundred cal. 9'''90 movements were discovered stored in an old wooden chest. These movements were made in 1959 and it was decided that they would be the basis of a new reference - 5105. The design of the dial and case took its inspiration from another 20th century classic model from 1936, reference 492, with its bold and streamlined Art Deco styling. The new rectangular case, made only in platinum as befitting the status of the authentic historic movements, features a domed crystal and satin and mirror-polished finishes to stunning effect. The sapphire crystal back allows the beauty of the 1959 period movement to be fully appreciated. The silver plated satin-finished dial is a faithful replica of the 1936 original. With railway minute track, applied white gold baton hour markers and Roman ‘XII’ it successfully captures the spirit and superb finish of the original.
This platinum reference 5105P-001 is the perfect wristwatch for those who look for both exclusivity and wearability, a part of Patek Philippe’s history and one of an edition of very special watches that can never be repeated.
