Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the girl in this interior is the artist's daughter, Ulrike Hampel (1904-2002). A smaller portrait of Ulrike sold at Christie’s, London, 13 December 2016, lot 24. In the present painting Hampel has placed his daughter in the centre of one of his favoured subjects – an interior.
