Lot Essay

Lear visited Hebron in April, 1858. A related sketch is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. WA1942.168), and another watercolour from the same viewpoint is in the Royal Collection (D. Millar, The Victorian Watercolours and Drawings in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, London, 1985, vol. I, p. 535).
