Lot Essay

Sant' Angelo is a Byzantine castle located on the northwest coast of Corfu. The artist revisited the present composition on occasion, with a similar view being engraved for Lear's Views in the Seven Ionian Islands, 1863 (pl. 7).

For another view of Corfu by Lear, see lot 267.
