Lot Essay

'In 1962 I walked nearly every day from the Slade School to our home in Pimlico Road, passing through Soho. Outside the strip clubs there were many photos of girls supposedly working there. At this time I was painting pinups and racing cars. The small painting FOUR (acrylic on board) I gave to a friend at this time before my first show at the Rowan Gallery the following year. This painting relates to Where the Boys Are, 1962 (oil on canvas 153 x 153 cm.) but painted in a more controlled way. It's good to see it again still looking sharp'.

Private correspondence with the artist, September 2024.
