Lot Essay

THE ‘ZIP’ NECKLACE, AN ICON BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS
One of the most innovative jewels ever created, the Van Cleef & Arpels’ ‘Zip’ necklace is an iconic design. Legend has it that during the 1930s the Duchess of Windsor asked Renée Puissant, the creative director of the brand between 1926-1942 and daughter of Alfred Van Cleef & Esther Arpels, to create a jewelled zip fastener to wear with her evening gowns.
Although the patent for the design was registered in 1938, it was not until 1951 that Van Cleef & Arpels presented the first ‘Zip’ necklace. The Zip Collection still pays homage to the world of fashion today, recreating zippers adorned with filigree, precious stones, andingenious mechanisms.
