Lot Essay

Previously given to Jan Brueghel I and Sir Peter Paul Rubens by Eric Larsen and Justus Müller Hofstede, the figures of the Virgin and Child in the present work repeat, with slight variations, those in the inner face of the left wing of a triptych by Rubens now in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp (inv. nos. 300-304; fig. 1). That work was commissioned by Maria Maes, the widow of Jan Michielsen, a wealthy Antwerp merchant, soon after her husband's death in 1617, providing a terminus post quem for the present work.
