Details
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Autograph manuscript of the song 'O Jugend, o schöne Rosenzeit', op.57 no.4, [Leipzig, 1843]
For voice and piano, on five systems of three staves, two pages, 295 x 225mm, bifolium, a few emendations, inscribed by Mendelssohn at upper right, 'H.D.m.', autograph attribution of the text to 'von Zuccalmaglio' at the conclusion. Blue cloth portfolio. Provenance: Sotheby's, 9 December 1999, lot 175.

'Oh youth, oh fair time of roses': a setting of a Rhenish folksong. In spite of its calligraphic appearance, the superscription 'H[ilf] D[u] m[ir]' (help me, God) indicates that this is the original draft, something which is confirmed by the presence of a few discreet emendations throughout, most notable at the key-change in the last stanza. The text is from a collection of folk songs gathered by Anton Wilhelm von Zuccalmaglio (1803-1869), mostly from his home region of the Bergisches Land in the Rhineland.

[Sold with:] a printed edition of the Sechs Lieder, op.57 (Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, n.d.).
