Lot Essay

Antonio Pietro Martino was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1902. Part of a family of artists, Martino studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art before founding Martino Commercial Art Studios with his brothers in 1941. He later moved to California around 1971, where he lived for the remainder of his life.

The present work depicts Motif No. 1, an eminent structure located in Rockport, Massachusetts. An icon of the coastal town, the fishing shack was countlessly revisited by American artists.
