First edition, one of 1000 copies, with two leaves from Wilde's autograph draft for 'The Fisherman and His Soul' tipped in.
Wilde's collection is celebrated for its rich, ornate prose, and features stories which delve into themes of beauty, morality, and the human condition. Influenced by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, classical mythology and Judeo-Christian imagery, Wilde's tales subvert traditional fairytale conventions, presenting morally ambiguous characters and situations. Wilde claimed the collection was ‘intended neither for the British child nor the British public’. Two leaves from Wilde's autograph draft for 'The Fisherman and his Soul' are tipped in: numbered '21' and '22', from the words ''Go wherever thou wilt ...' to '... went weeping away over the marshes'.

The two autograph leaves tipped in facing pp.82 and 84: 2 pages, 323 x 200mm, with cancellations and emendations, laid on to paper (paper brittle and soiled, losses to corners, printer's markings). Original decorated cloth (some darkening and spotting, some splitting to hinges and textblock); custom green quarter morocco box. Provenance: Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
