Philips Koninck was a pupil of Rembrandt (1606-1669) who developed a strong graphic practice alongside his meticulous landscape paintings. Executed in lively, rapid strokes, the artist evidently enjoyed depicting tavern-goers and their joyful excess. The same use of wash for the shadows and irregular cross-hatching, prominent noses and dark eyes are found in other drawings (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Arsenal, inv. Res. B-12-PET FOL and Paris, Louvre, inv. RF652; see W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, Vol.6, New York, 1979, n°1334 and n°1467x respectively).

Elève de Rembrandt (1606-1669), Philips Koninck a développé, à côté de peintures soignées faisant une large place aux paysages, une œuvre graphique forte. Avec une ligne généralement nerveuse et parfois fulgurante, l’artiste y manifeste son goût prononcé pour le public des tavernes et les visages marquées par les excès : les ombres en lavis et hachures irrégulières, les nez proéminents, les yeux sombres et marqués se retrouvent dans d’autres dessins (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Arsenal, inv. Res. B-12-PET FOL et Paris, Louvre, inv. RF652 ; voir W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, Vol.6, New York, 1979, respectivement n°1334 et n°1467x).
