LOUIS-GABRIEL MOREAU, CALLED MOREAU THE ELDER, A RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERDS AND ANIMALS, BODYCOLOUR

A pupil of Demachy and admitted to the Académie de Saint-Luc in 1764, Moreau l'Aîné specialised in gouaches and watercolours, which he exhibited at the Salon from 1791, alongside a number of oil paintings. Arthur Veil-Picard, to whom one of the two gouaches belonged (according to an inscription, verso), and David-Weill, were among the main collectors in the twentieth century, following in the footsteps of the Comte d'Artois at the end of the Ancien Régime, who rehabilitated the artist. Another Veil Picard bodycolor has been sold at Artcurial, Paris, 23 March 2017, lot 39.

Elève de Demachy, reçu à l’académie de Saint-Luc en 1764, Moreau l’Aîné se spécialise dans les gouaches et aquarelles, qu’il exposera au Salon à partir de 1791, au milieu de quelques tableaux à l’huile.
Arthur Veil-Picard, a qui l’une des deux gouaches a appartenu (selon une inscriptions au verso), et David-Weill, en furent parmi les principaux collectionneurs au XX^e siècle, prenant la suite du Comte d’Artois à la fin de l’Ancien Régime qui avait réhabilité l’artiste. Une autre gouache Veil Picard est passée en vente chez Artcurial, Paris, 23 mars 2017, lot 39.
