Album of 484 pages of ink manuscript text including a one-page preface, interspersed with seventy-six albumen prints, carte-de-visite to approx. 9¼ x 11½ in., one each signed in the negative Comianos & Sarolidis, Shepherd & Robertson and Bourne & Shepherd, two with blindstamp of T. R. Dumas, eleven signed and numbered in the negatives by Bourne, ink manuscript captions, half brown morocco, titled and dated in gilt on front cover, g.e., folio; with a small quantity of manuscript and printed ephemera including letters, invitation cards and menus. Lot Essay

Compiled and written by Col. Leathes and documenting his journey to India via Malta and Egypt and return on H.M. Troopship Crocodile, January 16 to April 6, 1879. Including one view of the ship, another copied from a drawing of the ship in a great gale, eleven views and six c-de-v portraits from Malta, four Egyptian views and twenty-four portraits of which fourteen are c-de-v-size, the remainder Indian subjects comprising nine views in Bombay, two at Elephanta, one each at 'Kandala', Tanjore, 'Waldeshwar'and Lucknow, three at Nynee Tal, three at the Taj Mahal and two at the 'Dewan i Kass', Delhi. Other Indian subjects comprise a portrait titled 'Group of Indian Natives, Northern Provinces'(illus.), the Maharaja Raghuraj Singh of Rewah, the Hairy family of Mandalay (numbered 2361 by Bourne & Shepherd), Sir Jang Bahadur of Nepal with his wife, a Parsee group , a Nautch dancer and a street scene with a bullock cart by Shepherd & Robertson.
