The case with convex mouldings to the plinth, on later skirted foot, rectangular trunk door, the forward sliding hood with twist columns and later pierced wood sound fret to the flat top, the 20.55cm. square dial signed J. Windmills London on the silvered chapter ring with matted centre and pierced blued steel hand, winged cherub and foliate spandrels, the movement of typical lantern form with verge escapement countwheel strike on bell, the four pillars of circular section secured at the top plate with brass knots

Lot Essay

Joseph Windmills was based at St Martin's-le Grand, afterwards in Marklane. He was admitted to the Clockmakers' Compagny in 1671 and was master in 1702. (F.J. Britten, Old Clocks and Watches & Their Makers, Woodbridge, 1977, p. 506)
