DION PEARS
Escadrille Cavallino Rampante - An original painting depicting the Spad VII of Francesco Baracca; from which Enzo Ferrari took the famous prancing horse motif from the squadron emblem on the fuselage. Oil on canvas, signed by the artist, unframed.
22 x 34 inches (58x86cm)
Baracca, a leading Italian air ace of the first world war, was credited with 35 aircraft shot down, flying Nieuport and Spad fighters. Ferrari met him after his victory at Ravenna in 1923, and the Baracca family sent the piece of fabric from his aeroplane to Enzo, in memory of his brother, who had given his life while serving with the squadron.
