Lot Essay

The site of this watercolour has not yet been identified but in the general composition and the stressing of the isolated tree on the left it resembles Llanthony Abbey of circa 1794; it may therefore be a view in North Wales (see A. Wilton, Turner in Wales, exhibition catalogue, Llandudno, Mostyn Art Gallery, and Swansea, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and Museum, July-November 1984, p. 40, no. 17, illustrated, and map on p. 34).
