Lot Essay

The drawing was executed while Constable was visiting the Rev. W. Driffield, Vicar of Feering in Essex; see lot 30. The vicar was an old friend of Constable's father, had previously lived at East Bergholt, and had christened Constable.
Markshall is about four miles to the north of East Bergholt. The church, seen on the right, was demolished in 1932, the house itself in 1951.
The study on the reverse of the drawing, although executed rapidly, is nevertheless a complete composition, occupying about a sixth of the paper (see below).
