Lot Essay

This romantic depiction of Edinburgh is a capriccio showing Edinburgh Castle, and the tower of St. Giles Cathedral from a vantage point that is probably Calton Hill.
The Rheinfels near St. Goar was a popular location for artists on their journeys down the Rhine and has been captured by many artists such as J.M.W. Turner, R.A. (1775-1851), William Callow, R.W.S. (1812-1908) and Thomas Miles Richardson, Junior, R.W.S. (1813-1890).
