Lot Essay

Okement Hill, on Dartmoor, overlooks the market town of Okehampton and stands equidistant between the villages of Belstone and Gidleigh. It provided many subjects for Mole, who was born in Alnwick, Northumberland, and who also painted in Surrey before moving to Devon. He exhibited 697 watercolours at the New Watercolour Society and became Vice President of its successor, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, in 1884. He also exhibited at the British Institution, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Grosvenor Gallery and elsewhere. Christie's London held his studio sale on 1 February 1887.
