Lot Essay

Vuillard's mother was a widow for forty-five of her ninety years. Her name was Marie Michaud when she married Joseph Franois Honore Vuillard, a professional soldier twenty-seven years her senior. He died leaving her with little means of support and she spent most of her life as a professional corset-maker, retiring in 1898. She died in 1928.

Antoine Salomon will include this painting in his forthcoming Vuillard catagloue raisonn.
